Waiting on the city's bulky pickup?
If you live in the City of Los Angeles, LA Sanitation will pick up big items like couches, mattresses, chairs and tables for free. It's a good service. Here's how it works, what it doesn't take, and when it makes more sense to call us.
How the free city pickup works
- It's curbside. You put the items out at the curb.
- It's free for single-family homes, and there's no limit on how much you put out.
- It happens on your regular trash day.
- You have to book it at least one business day before your trash day, online, in the MyLA311 app, or by calling the city.
- The city also runs free drop-off days. The next two are Saturday, Nov 21 and Saturday, Dec 12, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, at five city yards, including Sun Valley and Northridge.

What the city pickup doesn't cover
The city's curbside pickup won't take:
- Construction materials (concrete, bricks, dirt)
- Auto parts or used oil
- Commercial appliances
- Paint, solvents or chemicals
- Medicine or needles
- Fluorescent lights
- Cardboard, unless you booked a Move In/Move Out pickup
It also doesn't carry anything out for you. Everything has to be at the curb.
When the free city pickup is the right call
- You can get the items to the curb yourself.
- You can wait for your trash day.
- It's household stuff the city takes, like a couch, a mattress or a few chairs.
If that's you, use the city. It's free.
When we can help
- You need it gone today or tomorrow. We do same day or next day when a slot is open.
- It's inside the house, the garage, the backyard or up the stairs. You point, we lift, haul and dispose.
- You don't want to drag a sectional to the curb or leave a mattress sitting out for days.
- You don't need to be home. Send a photo and we'll tell you which flat price fits.
How much does junk removal cost?
We charge by how much room your stuff takes in our truck. Flat prices, with labor, hauling and disposal included:
- Small load $175: about 4 cubic yards. A couch, a fridge, or a few boxes.
- 1/4 truck $249: about 8 cubic yards. A bedroom's worth, or 3-5 bigger items.
- Half truck $495: about 16 cubic yards. A packed one-car garage or a small apartment.
- Full truck (32 cubic yards) $989: a two-car garage, a house cleanout, a full move-out.
Know your price before we show up. If what's on site is different from what you described, we'll tell you before we load anything, and nothing extra is charged without your OK.
